Who Is Forest Schools For?

The honest answer

Who is Forest Schools™ for?

It is a fair question, and the short answer surprises most people.

Forest Schools™ is not an age group. It is an approach, and people of every age need it.

From babies to adults, the approach does not change. The pace does.

What stays constant is the long-term, regular, outdoor experience led by a trained adult who observes rather than directs. What changes is what each stage is ready for.

Babies and under threes

Being before becoming

Weather on skin, uneven ground underfoot, daylight, texture and the steady presence of a familiar adult. Almost all of it is sensory, relational and unhurried.

Early years

Wonder and first independence

Exploration, repetition, mud, water, small challenges met and recovered from. This is where confidence begins to belong to the child rather than the adult.

Primary

Capability and belonging

Tools, shelter building, problem solving, cooperation and real responsibility. Children who struggle indoors frequently become someone else entirely outdoors.

Secondary and older

Identity and contribution

Leadership, mentoring younger groups, genuine skills and work that visibly matters. Often the most effective route back for young people who have disengaged.

Additional needs

An environment that adapts

The outdoors makes fewer demands and offers more ways to succeed. Sensory regulation, communication and social confidence often move first here.

Adults

The same needs, later

Wellbeing groups, families, teams and communities. Nobody outgrows the need for time, weather, challenge and companionship.

Where our learners work

And who trains with us

Our learners come from almost every setting that spends time with people:

  • Nurseries, pre-schools and childminders
  • Primary and secondary schools
  • Special schools and SEND provision
  • Alternative and specialist provision
  • Home educators and home education groups
  • Youth work, care and community organisations
  • Outdoor centres, estates and country parks
  • Charities, wellbeing services and therapeutic settings
  • People building a Forest Schools™ business of their own

You do not need a woodland. You do not need an outdoor background. You do not need to be a teacher. You need a group of people, a piece of outdoor space you can return to regularly, and a willingness to be trained properly.

And what it is not

Being clear about this saves everyone time

Forest Schools™ is not simply outdoor learning. It is not bushcraft. It is not a collection of games. It is not a woodland activity programme. It is not a one-off day out.

It is a long-term, learner-led approach in which the same group returns to the same outdoor space over time, and the adult's job is to observe, enable and get out of the way.

  • If you want a single enrichment day, this is probably not it
  • If you want a rolling programme of outdoor games, this is not it either
  • If you want to change how people learn, and you can commit to returning regularly, this is exactly it

The real answer

Forest Schools™ is for anyone who learns better when they are trusted.Which, in our experience, is everyone.
